United Kingdom sees surge in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations
The United Kingdom is experiencing a significant rise in Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations. According to data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), monthly infection rates rose from 1,374 in August to 4,589 in September, a 230 percent increase. Hospital admissions saw an even sharper rise, jumping from 950 in August to 4,939 in September, representing a roughly 420 percent increase.
More than half of the positive hospital tests have been identified as the XFG variant, also known as the Stratus or ‘American Covid’ variant. This variant was first identified in January and has since spread globally. While current numbers remain well below the January 2021 peak of 20,000 hospitalizations, health officials are urging the public to receive their flu and Covid vaccinations ahead of the winter months.
