United Kingdom strengthens nuclear ties with US, France, and Australia
The United Kingdom is strengthening its nuclear relationships with the United States, France, and Australia. Under the Northwood Declaration agreed in July 2025, Britain and France have recognized that any extreme threat to Europe would prompt a joint response.
Regarding the AUKUS partnership, recent developments included the docking of HMS Anson at HMAS Stirling near Perth in February. The United States remains Britain’s closest defense ally, maintaining long-standing cooperation on nuclear policy, operations, and technology.
To oversee the significant financial scale of these operations, a new House of Commons committee will be established by the Prime Minister. This committee is tasked with scrutinizing expenditure and programs across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE). This move follows recommendations from the Strategic Defence Review to ensure taxpayer money is managed wisely. The DNE spent £12 billion in the 2025/26 financial year, with projected spending through British suppliers exceeding £100 billion over the next decade.
