United Kingdom to invest 6 billion pounds in submarine production
The United Kingdom is implementing a strategic shift in its defense procurement to bolster domestic industrial capacity. The government plans to invest approximately 6 billion pounds into expanding the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness and upgrading Rolls-Royce reactor facilities. This investment is intended to support the SSN-AUKUS program, with manufacturing slated to begin in 2027.
As part of this security-focused policy, the UK will exclude foreign companies from bidding on the construction of new nuclear submarine docks. Chancellor of the Exchequer Mr. Healey is expected to announce plans for three new floating docks in Faslane, Scotland, to maintain the Trident submarine fleet. This move follows reports that over 30 billion pounds in UK defense contracts were awarded to foreign suppliers over the last five years.
BAE Systems will lead the production of nuclear-powered vessels at the Barrow site, aiming to double domestic submarine production capacity.
