United Kingdom to host new Five Eyes counter-extremism hub

The United Kingdom will host a permanent Countering Violent Extremism Hub in London following an agreement between the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing allies. The initiative, secured by UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood during a Five Country Ministerial in Sydney, involves the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The hub aims to bring together counter-terrorism and counter-extremism specialists to share intelligence, analyze patterns of extremist behavior, and develop joint prevention strategies. A primary focus is early intervention, identifying warning signs of radicalization before they escalate into violence. This is particularly aimed at addressing evolving threats on online platforms, where extremists recruit and spread propaganda.

In addition to the hub, ministers agreed on a new diversion program designed to help authorities intervene more quickly when individuals show signs of radicalization. This program will work alongside existing efforts, such as the UK’s Prevent program, and involves collaboration with technology companies to combat harmful online content.
