United Kingdom to mobilize military veterans in major resilience drill

The United Kingdom is planning a major mobilization exercise for its military veterans next year to test national resilience. Armed Forces Minister Louise Sandher-Jones announced that a cohort from the strategic reserve, which consists of approximately 95,000 retired troops, will be called into action on a scale not seen for a long time.

The drill comes amid heightened concerns that the UK could be drawn into a conflict with Russia by 2030. Tensions have escalated following threats from Moscow against British factories producing drones for Ukraine, and warnings from Western intelligence regarding potential sabotage campaigns by Vladimir Putin.

The announcement coincides with political scrutiny over defense spending. While the government seeks to prepare for potential conflict, Prime Minister Andy Burnham's administration faces questions regarding military budgets, as Chancellor John Healey has not committed to the target of spending 3 per cent of GDP on defense by 2030. Recent cost-cutting measures have already resulted in the suspension of certain training exercises and live-firing drills within the Army's 3rd Division.
