United Kingdom to modernize fighter jets in Falkland Islands

The United Kingdom has confirmed it will modernize the fighter jet fleet deployed in the Falkland Islands. According to Luke Pollard, Minister of State for Defence Preparedness and Industry, the Royal Air Force (RAF) will replace four Typhoon Tranche 1 aircraft with four more advanced Tranche 2 units.

The rotation is scheduled to take place between late November and early December 2027. While the replacement aircraft are being drawn from the existing RAF fleet rather than new purchases, the Tranche 2 models feature superior radar systems, electronic capabilities, and weaponry. These jets are tasked with maintaining a quick reaction alert capability in the South Atlantic.

The announcement comes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions regarding sovereignty claims by Argentina. The decision follows recent comments by Donald Trump, who described a potential conflict over the islands as a “potential disaster.” British authorities maintain that the deployment update is part of a pre-planned rotation.
