From 27 August 2026 the United Kingdom will allow households to install plug‑in solar panels up to 800 W per circuit without prior electrical certification. The change comes as the country’s solar capacity exceeds 22.8 GW, with 27,391 new systems installed in June 2026 – the second‑largest monthly total on record – bringing the cumulative number of installations to 2.076 million.

The new rule is aimed at expanding the market for renters, tenants and homes where traditional rooftop installations are impractical. Industry observers say plug‑in solar is viewed as an additional market segment rather than a threat to conventional roof‑mounted systems. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is focusing first on solar kits, while plug‑in battery storage remains under technical and regulatory review. Companies such as Octopus Energy and Anker Solix are already planning battery products, with Octopus targeting a 2027 launch and Anker’s EU CEO noting potential annual savings of £100‑£400 per household through grid‑arbitrage.
