United Nations adopts global plan to combat digital crime
United Nations member states have adopted the Abu Dhabi Declaration during the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The plan aims to address rapidly evolving digital threats, including cybercrime, fraud, and emerging trends such as ‘crime as a service’ and ‘violence as a service.’
The declaration calls for strengthened international cooperation to combat the misuse of information and communication technologies. Participating countries committed to increasing the use of technology within justice systems, including the digitalization of legal processes and the integration of artificial intelligence in criminal justice responses.
To mitigate risks, the declaration emphasizes that technological advancements must be accompanied by safeguards, including human oversight, transparency, due process, and data protection. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed stated that justice must protect everyone and defend human rights without leaving anyone behind.
