United Nations adopts landmark resolution on assistive technology access

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted its first-ever resolution specifically focused on access to assistive technology. Presented by Pakistan and co-sponsored by over 40 member states, the resolution was adopted by consensus on September 2, 2026.

The resolution recognizes assistive technology—such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, prosthetics, and screen readers—as essential tools for sustainable development, universal health coverage, and the realization of rights for persons with disabilities and older persons. It calls for increased international cooperation to improve affordability and accessibility, particularly in developing nations.

In Nigeria, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) welcomed the move, stating it aligns with national obligations to prevent discrimination. The NCPWD emphasized that these technologies are essential enablers for independent living, education, and employment. Meanwhile, the resolution highlights the need for improved national planning, financing, and research to support the estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide who require assistive products.
