United Nations adopts new declaration to combat racism
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a new political declaration to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. This move marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, which was originally adopted in South Africa in 2001.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the fight against racism is increasingly urgent, noting that discrimination remains deeply embedded in institutions and societies. He called on states to move beyond rhetoric and implement concrete measures, such as strengthening anti-discrimination laws, ensuring their enforcement, and investing in inclusive societies.
The new declaration specifically addresses the evolving nature of racism in the digital age. Officials warned that emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, driven by biased datasets, risk reproducing or amplifying existing forms of discrimination. UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman urged the international community to translate commitments into funded national action plans with measurable results and accountability.
