United Nations briefs Security Council on Colombia, Syria, and Central Africa
The United Nations Security Council received several briefings regarding regional stability and peace processes. In Colombia, Miroslav Jenča, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, emphasized the necessity of ensuring the continuity and full implementation of the 2016 Peace Agreement. He noted that while there is an intention to meet constitutional obligations, concrete measures such as adequate funding, clear leadership, and the reactivation of specific commissions are required to address rising insecurity and illegal economies.
Regarding Syria, Deputy Special Envoy Claudio Cordone informed the Council that the country's economic situation is a critical factor for a successful transition and stability. He expressed readiness to cooperate with the Syrian government to connect international and domestic efforts for a Syrian-led transition.
In Central Africa, Mohamed El Amine Souef, head of the United Nations Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), arrived in Cameroon for meetings aimed at strengthening regional collaboration to address political and humanitarian challenges. Additionally, Elizabeth Spehar, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding and Peace Support, participated in the Geneva Peace Forum to discuss supporting global peacebuilding efforts.
