Haiti: UN calls for realistic election timeline amid gang violence

The United Nations has called for a ‘realistic’ electoral calendar in Haiti, warning that setting unfeasible dates could erode public trust and institutional credibility. UN Special Representative Carlos Ruiz Massieu reported to the Security Council that while electoral preparations have reached an unprecedented level—with over 35 political parties and 3,500 candidates registered—the country faces extreme security challenges.

Between July and October 2026, gang violence resulted in at least 1,123 deaths and 440 injuries. The UN documented widespread sexual violence, noting that 689 women and girls were victims of gang-related sexual assault in July and August, with 87% of those cases being collective rapes.

The security crisis has caused a massive humanitarian emergency, with nearly 1.5 million people internally displaced, including more than 740,000 children. Additionally, the Haitian economy is expected to contract for the seventh consecutive year in 2026, and the humanitarian response plan remains significantly underfunded.
