United Nations challenges Portugal's proposed gender identity law changes
The United Nations has urged the Portuguese parliament to reconsider or withdraw legislative proposals that aim to amend the country’s gender identity laws. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned in a letter to the President of the Assembly of the Republic that the changes proposed by the PSD, Chega, and CDS-PP parties could violate international human rights obligations.
The proposed amendments seek to reintroduce requirements for medical documentation to legally change name and gender in civil registries, a move the UN argues risks pathologizing gender identity. Additionally, the proposals from PSD and Chega would remove the current ability for 16 and 17-year-olds to request such changes with parental consent. The CDS-PP proposal also includes measures to restrict access to hormonal treatments for minors.
In response to these legislative moves, activists behind a petition with over 75,000 signatures have requested an audience with the President of Portugal to express concerns regarding the loss of self-determination. The UN has emphasized the need for transparent and inclusive consultations, particularly with the youth populations directly affected by these potential changes.
