UN expands database of companies linked to Israeli settlements
The UN Human Rights Office has updated its database of companies involved in activities within Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The latest update adds 61 new companies to the list, bringing the total number of documented businesses to 214 from 11 different countries.
The companies identified are linked to various sectors, including agriculture, transport, energy, food, and hospitality. The UN criteria for inclusion involve activities such as facilitating settlement construction, providing surveillance equipment, or supplying services that contribute to the maintenance of these settlements. Notable companies remaining on the list include Airbnb, Expedia, and Booking.com.
While the majority of the listed firms are Israeli, the database also includes entities from the United States, China, France, Germany, and several other nations. Conversely, five companies were removed from the list after providing evidence that they had ceased their involvement in settlement-related activities.
Israel has rejected the database, describing it as a biased political tool intended to persecute the state and its businesses. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk stated that the report serves as a reminder of the human rights responsibilities companies must uphold through due diligence.
