United Nations faces calls for reform amid shifting global order

The United Nations is facing significant scrutiny as the global order undergoes reconfiguration. Critics point to the need for urgent reform within the organization, particularly regarding the effectiveness of the Security Council. The rise of new alliances, such as BRICS, and the shifting focus of major powers present challenges to the traditional multilateral framework established after World War II.

During a symposium in Washington, Rafael Grossi, the current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a candidate for UN leadership, advocated for a more focused and efficient organization. Grossi argued that the UN has become overly redundant, with multiple organizations performing similar tasks, leading to bureaucratic inefficiencies. He emphasized that while the institution needs reform to avoid being dispersed, it remains the only truly global instrument capable of addressing international peace, security, development, and human rights.
