United Nations General Assembly faces notable leadership absences
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) is convening in Manhattan, New York, marked by the notable absence of several high-profile world leaders.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will not attend the assembly due to domestic political challenges following recent election results in Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In these regions, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) lost leadership positions, and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the party failed to enter the local parliament. To represent Germany, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul will speak at the assembly.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also prioritized her domestic agenda over international appearances this week, citing a heavy schedule of consecutive international meetings, including the recent NATO summit.
