United Nations General Assembly remains vital amid global divisions
The United Nations General Assembly remains a critical forum for international debate despite increasing geopolitical divisions and the paralysis of the UN Security Council. As a platform where all 193 member states hold a voice and a vote, the Assembly provides a space for discussing war, peace, climate change, human rights, and the global economic order.
Historically, the Assembly has stepped in to manage crises when the Security Council was deadlocked by tensions between major powers, such as during the Cold War and the 1956 Suez Crisis. While its resolutions generally lack the binding force of Security Council decisions, the Assembly has demonstrated a capacity for crisis management and has evolved significantly through the process of decolonization.
