United Nations Human Rights Council concludes 63rd session
The United Nations Human Rights Council concluded its 63rd regular session in Geneva, approving 34 resolutions and electing several special mandate holders. Regarding the conflict in Sudan, the Council strongly condemned the devastating impact on civilians following the takeover of El Fasher, specifically citing atrocities allegedly committed by the Rapid Support Forces. The Council noted these acts could constitute crimes against humanity or war crimes and extended the mandate of the International Independent Investigation Mission for one year.
Additionally, the Council expressed concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in the Russian Federation, highlighting reports of extrajudicial executions of government critics and the erosion of political pluralism. It also extended the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation in Russia.
In a separate human rights dialogue at the UN General Assembly, international mechanisms recognized Mexico's progress in establishing a legal framework to combat feminicide. While the Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) praised Mexico's efforts to integrate gender perspectives into legal definitions, officials warned of persistent challenges. These include impunity, operational fragmentation among justice agencies, and the need for better risk anticipation to prevent murders before they occur.
