United Nations leaders clash over sovereignty and multilateralism

World leaders at the United Nations have highlighted a growing divide between two competing visions of global governance: national sovereignty and multilateralism.

One perspective emphasizes the primacy of the nation-state, where countries cooperate for mutual interest but retain absolute control over their own laws, borders, military, and technology. This view, represented by President Donald Trump, rejects the authority of unelected global bureaucrats and opposes international oversight of domestic technology or the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.

In contrast, UN Secretary-General António Guterres advocates for a revitalized multilateral system. This vision calls for stronger international institutions and shared global standards to address modern challenges. A key point of contention is the regulation of artificial intelligence, with Guterres proposing a multilateral risk-management framework with independent oversight, while the sovereignty-focused approach seeks to maintain national leadership in the sector without international control. Israel has emerged as a central point of tension within this geopolitical divide.
