United Nations leaders debate pandemic preparedness and response
World leaders and health officials convened at the United Nations in New York to discuss pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. The meeting aimed to build momentum for global health security, five years after the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant loss of life and economic disruption.
Despite the urgency, the meeting faced challenges as member countries failed to reach a consensus on a draft declaration intended to conclude the session. UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman emphasized the need to learn from the successes and failures of the COVID-19 era, noting the heightened risk posed by the rapidly growing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus highlighted that the previous pandemic exposed deep inequalities in vaccine and treatment access. He noted that the WHO has established several initiatives to strengthen national capacities, surveillance, and equitable access to medical tools, including the Pandemic Fund and the BioHub in Switzerland.
