United Nations leaders debate relevance and power sharing

The annual United Nations General Assembly concluded with world leaders expressing both a desire for the organization to function effectively and a growing belief that it is currently failing. During more than 150 speeches, a central theme emerged regarding the relevance of the UN in an era of modern challenges such as pandemics, climate change, and artificial intelligence.

Many nations are calling for a redistribution of power, specifically requesting permanent seats for African nations and island states threatened by climate change. Critics pointed to the existing structure of the UN Security Council, where five nations retain veto power established after World War II, as a barrier to modern multilateralism. El Salvador’s foreign minister, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, questioned the organization's continued relevance, while Samoa’s deputy prime minister noted that “multilateralism is under siege.”
