United Nations marks International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

The United Nations is marking the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29. The initiative, established by UN General Assembly Resolution 74/209, aims to promote more sustainable food systems and increase global awareness regarding the scale of the problem.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 13% of food produced is lost after harvest and before reaching the market. Additionally, 19% of food available to consumers is wasted within trade, food services, and households. The 2026 theme focuses on ‘The transformative potential of reducing food loss and waste.’

Addressing these issues can improve food security, protect natural resources, reduce emissions, and foster economic growth. The UN calls for collaborative action among producers, businesses, governments, and consumers to improve planning, storage, and conservation practices.
