United Nations and UK mark international days for victims of terrorism and religious violence

Global observances are marking the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism and the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.

In the United Kingdom, the government held its inaugural National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism in London. Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged to consult survivors regarding a permanent national memorial and promised reforms to improve legal assistance and compensation for those affected by terror attacks.

The United Nations and the European Union have issued statements emphasizing the need to protect human rights and combat religious discrimination. The EU highlighted that freedom of religion is restricted in many countries, while the UN focused on the importance of supporting survivors' mental health and protecting them from online harms such as disinformation.

Other nations also marked the occasion. Pakistan reported significant economic and human losses due to terrorism, noting that 2025 has been one of its deadliest years. In Canada, organizations joined families of October 7 victims to honor those lost to terrorism. Meanwhile, reports from Cuba and Nigeria highlighted specific instances of religious and political violence affecting local communities.
