United Nations prepares for leadership transition and regional coordination

The United Nations is preparing for a leadership transition as current Secretary-General António Guterres concludes his second term on December 31. Six candidates are currently vying for the position: Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Mariano Grossi, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Rebeca Grynspan, Macky Sall, and Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett. Rebeca Grynspan is noted as a leading candidate, though any appointment requires approval from the UN Security Council permanent members.

The incoming leadership faces significant challenges regarding the organization’s relevance, authority, and financial capacity. Potential restructuring of the UN to restore its prestige is a key consideration for the successor.

In Brazil, Chilean economist and diplomat Igor Garafulic has assumed the role of UN Resident Coordinator. Leading 25 UN agencies and approximately 3,500 workers in the country, Garafulic intends to prioritize the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His mandate focuses on aligning international commitments with national priorities, emphasizing inequality reduction and environmental preservation as essential components of economic development.
