United Nations prepares for next secretary-general transition

As the selection process for the next United Nations secretary-general continues, the incoming leader will face a complex global landscape characterized by a breakdown in the postwar order and a decline in multilateralism. Outgoing Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a stronger institution capable of addressing modern challenges, including climate change, artificial intelligence governance, inequality, and ongoing conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and Gaza.

The institution currently faces significant hurdles, including a precarious financial situation driven largely by unpaid dues from the United States, which has necessitated cuts to humanitarian and development programs. Additionally, the UN is struggling to adapt to a multipolar reality where influence is increasingly dispersed.

Seven candidates are currently vying for the position, which is expected to be filled in 2027. Following the principle of regional rotation, the next leader is expected to be from Latin America or the Caribbean. Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica and Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett of Guyana have emerged as leading contenders. The successful candidate will need to navigate limited independent powers by leveraging political capital to oversee management and serve as the organization’s public voice.
