United Nations rejects death penalty after failed Tennessee execution
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reaffirmed his opposition to the death penalty following a failed execution attempt in Tennessee, United States. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that the death penalty should not exist and that nations should not utilize the practice.
The incident involved Christa Gail Pike, who was sentenced for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike survived after receiving two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital, remaining alive for more than 40 minutes after the final dose was administered.
Following the failed procedure, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered a suspension of all state-level executions until the end of the year. The event also drew calls for clemency from seven bishops representing Catholic, Episcopal, and Evangelical Lutheran churches, who argued that accountability should not require further loss of life.
