The United Nations has reported that 2025 marks the highest number of armed conflicts since World War II. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the UN Security Council, highlighting the critical link between violence and food insecurity.

According to UN reports, 2025 is the first year in the 21st century where simultaneous hunger hotspots have been confirmed in both Sudan and Gaza. At least 266 million people are currently facing acute hunger globally. The UN noted that conflict and violence are the primary drivers in 12 of the 13 most concerning hunger hotspots.

Furthermore, the UN highlighted the rising danger to aid workers, noting that over 1,000 humanitarian personnel have been killed in conflicts over the past three years. Guterres called for the strengthening of Resolution 2417 to address the cycle of armed conflict and food insecurity, emphasizing that parties must not deprive civilians of essential survival resources such as food, crops, livestock, and drinking water.
