United Nations Secretary-General race enters decisive phase

The race to select the next United Nations Secretary-General is entering a critical phase with upcoming informal consultations within the Security Council. Key dates have been identified for upcoming straw polls: one scheduled for September 17, and another expected on either September 28 or 29.

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is among the eight candidates in the running. His candidacy faces active opposition from the ‘Non à Macky Sall’ platform, which is mobilizing to influence consultations and prevent his name from gaining momentum. Despite reports of discouraging votes, Sall remains in the race, as no candidate is officially eliminated until the Security Council formally recommends a name to the General Assembly.

To succeed, a candidate must secure at least nine votes from the fifteen-member Security Council without triggering a veto from any of the five permanent members. The selection process is complicated by geopolitical tensions, coalition dynamics, and the need for a leader capable of navigating global security and human rights challenges.
