United Nations shifts role in Sahel after peacekeeping withdrawal

The United Nations is transitioning its role in the Sahel following the conclusion of its major peacekeeping mission in Mali. The mandate for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was terminated in June 2023 at the request of Mali’s transitional government, with a full withdrawal completed by the end of that year.

Despite the departure of peacekeeping troops, the UN maintains a presence through the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), focusing on diplomacy, mediation, and humanitarian assistance. This shift occurs as the geopolitical landscape changes; Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger formally exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 29, 2025, and have instead strengthened their cooperation via the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

While these nations emphasize sovereignty and strategic autonomy, humanitarian challenges such as food insecurity, displacement, and regional instability persist across borders.
