United Nations urges Nigeria to support women farmers

The United Nations has called on the Nigerian government to strengthen the implementation of gender-responsive agricultural policies ahead of the 2026 International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF). During a press conference in Abuja, officials highlighted that women constitute approximately 70 percent of those involved in food crop production, processing, and commercialization in Nigeria.

Despite their central role in the country’s agrifood systems, women face significant structural barriers. These include limited access to land, finance, technology, agricultural inputs, extension services, and decision-making opportunities. UN representatives emphasized that addressing these inequalities is a strategic necessity for improving food security, nutrition, and economic growth.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been working with various stakeholders to promote climate-smart agriculture and financial inclusion. UN Women noted that climate change poses an additional threat to women farmers, who often lack the resources to adapt compared to their male counterparts.
