United Nations warns of escalating US-Iran hostilities
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern regarding the potential escalation of hostilities between the United States and Iran. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted that new measures and rhetoric could exacerbate the conflict, which is already causing disruptions in the global flow of food and energy.
Following new US sanctions, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi sent a letter to the UN, which has been distributed to the Security Council and General Assembly. Guterres emphasized that a durable settlement can only be reached through dialogue and expressed appreciation for the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and Pakistan.
In Tehran, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned that Iran would respond harshly to any 'malicious' acts by the United States by targeting military and economic interests in West Asia. Rezaei also stated that Iran would only reopen the Strait of Hormuz after Washington takes practical steps to meet Tehran's conditions.
