United Rugby Championship season begins amid major transfers and Welsh restructuring

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is set to begin its new season this Friday, featuring significant roster changes across its 16 clubs. Notable transfers include Joey Carbery returning to Leinster and Wilco Louw moving from the Bulls to the Stormers. The Stormers have also bolstered their squad with Springboks Siya Kolisi and Cheslin Kolbe.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has proposed a plan to reduce the number of professional regions in Wales from four to three starting in the 2028-29 season. Under this proposal, Cardiff would represent the capital, the Dragons would represent the east, and the Scarlets and Ospreys would compete for a single license for West Wales. The licensing process is scheduled to commence in December.
