United Russia wins landslide in Russian parliamentary elections
The ruling United Russia party achieved a landslide victory in the Russian parliamentary elections, securing at least 355 seats in the 450-member State Duma. According to preliminary results from the Central Election Commission, the party obtained 57.83% of the vote, surpassing its 2021 performance of 49.8%. This result grants the party an absolute majority in the lower house.
Election official Ella Pamfilova reported a record-breaking voter turnout exceeding 59%. These elections were the first held since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine and were characterized by the exclusion of anti-war parties, such as Yabloko, leaving only political groups that support the Kremlin and the ongoing military operations.
In regional elections, Ramzan Kadyrov was re-elected as the leader of Chechnya for a fifth term, receiving 99.85% of the vote.
The voting period was marked by security incidents, including Ukrainian drone strikes in the Moscow region that damaged a refinery and an attack in the Kherson region that killed two people, including an election official.
