United Russia wins record supermajority in Russian Duma elections
Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party has secured a record-breaking supermajority in Russia’s State Duma, the country’s lower house of parliament. Following the first parliamentary elections held since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, preliminary results from the Central Election Commission indicate that United Russia obtained approximately 57.83% of the vote and is on track to win 355 of the 450 available seats.
The election, which spanned three days and included voting in four occupied Ukrainian regions, saw a reported voter turnout exceeding 59%. This result grants the ruling party a constitutional majority, allowing it to amend the Russian Constitution without the support of other parties.
Other parties also secured representation: the Communist Party of the Russian Federation finished second with 40 seats, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) won 25 seats, the New People party secured 20 seats, and Russia Justa obtained approximately 5 seats. The anti-war Yabloko party failed to win any seats at the national level.
While Kremlin officials described the outcome as a sign of societal cohesion, international observers and critics characterized the process as tightly controlled, noting the exclusion of genuine opposition candidates and the absence of international monitors.
