United Russia wins record supermajority in Russian State Duma elections
The ruling United Russia party has secured a record supermajority in the Russian State Duma elections, winning 355 of the 450 available seats. According to preliminary results, the party obtained 57.83% of the vote, an increase from the 49.8% recorded in 2021.
Electoral Commission President Ella Pamfilova reported a voter turnout of over 59%, describing it as the highest level of consolidation seen for an election of this type. Other participating parties included the Communist Party, which earned 40 seats (approximately 13.8%), the nationalist LDPR with 25 seats (8.9%), and the New People party with 20 seats (7.9%). The Just Russia party narrowly missed the 5% electoral threshold with 4.95% of the vote.
This election was the first parliamentary contest held since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022. The Kremlin has characterized the results as a mandate for President Vladimir Putin and a sign of national unity. Meanwhile, the only significant anti-war party, Yabloko, was barred from participating by the Supreme Court. Critics and international observers have described the process as tightly controlled, noting the absence of genuine opposition and potential electoral manipulation.
