United Services Union opposes Newcastle waste privatisation
The United Services Union (USU) has expressed serious concerns regarding a proposed privatisation of waste services by the City of Newcastle. The union argues that the move to outsource collection services is being handled through secretive processes, specifically noting that the matter will be considered under confidential business at a council meeting.
The controversy stems from the implementation of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection services, which are mandated by the New South Wales government to be available to all households by July 2030. The City of Newcastle is working toward introducing FOGO by July 1 next year through a joint procurement process with Port Stephens Council.
While the City of Newcastle has stated that the introduction of FOGO will not result in job losses, the USU warns that outsourcing risks a “race to the bottom” regarding wages and working conditions. Acting Northern Industrial Officer Luke Hutchinson stated that the community deserves public debate rather than decisions made behind closed doors, arguing that the council should invest in its existing in-house workforce instead of private contractors.
