United States 250th anniversary commemorations begin

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, various organizations are engaging in commemorative activities ranging from educational advocacy to local cultural events.

In Portola Valley, several groups including the San Francisco Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the American Guild of Organists are collaborating on an ‘All-American Organ Recital’. The event at Christ Church will feature organist Barbara Baird performing works by American composers, including pieces that pay tribute to the civil rights movement. The celebration will also include a color guard procession with members in Revolutionary War military uniforms.

On a broader educational level, the National Youth Leadership Council is advocating for the integration of service-learning into curricula. The organization suggests that service-learning serves as a bridge between civic understanding and action, helping to prepare the next generation of citizens to participate in and strengthen democracy beyond standardized testing.
