United States abortion rights face increased legal scrutiny and political focus

Following the 2022 Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion rights have become a central issue in the United States. Advocacy groups are working to keep reproductive rights on the political agenda for upcoming elections, noting that 57% of voters consider the topic extremely or very important.

Data from Pregnancy Justice reveals that between June 2022 and June 2025, 902 women were investigated and 955 charges were filed related to potential harm to a fetus. The majority of these cases (91.7%) involve allegations of child abuse, neglect, or endangering a minor. These legal actions are most prevalent in states that have adopted fetal personhood policies, specifically South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

Approximately 6 million Hispanic women in the U.S. live in states with varying levels of abortion restrictions. Advocates argue that federal legislation is necessary to ensure consistent protection of reproductive rights across the country.
