United States accelerates nuclear energy policy via microreactors and large-scale projects

The United States is accelerating its nuclear energy policy through two distinct strategic tracks. The Department of Defense has selected five companies to construct nuclear microreactors at military bases, backed by contracts exceeding $2 billion. These small, portable reactors are designed to provide energy self-sufficiency for military installations, particularly in areas with poor infrastructure or high vulnerability to cyberattacks on traditional energy grids.

Simultaneously, the administration is supporting large-scale industrial development by providing $17.5 billion in loans for the construction of ten major nuclear reactors. To bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial use, the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Projects program has been established. This initiative aims to develop advanced reactor technologies, such as high-temperature modules and fast reactors, within a seven-year timeframe to regain technological momentum.
