Brazil and China challenge US tariffs at the WTO
The United States has agreed to enter formal consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) with Brazil following a complaint regarding additional tariffs on Brazilian exports. Brazil alleges that the US measures, which include a 25% tariff based on alleged unfair economic practices and a 12.5% tariff related to forced labor investigations, violate GATT 1994 rules and the principle of most-favored nation status.
China has formally requested to participate in these WTO consultations as a third party, citing a “substantial commercial interest.” Beijing argues that the US tariffs affect the competitive conditions of Chinese products in the American market.
In response to the trade pressure, ApexBrasil has launched an emergency support program to assist approximately 5,400 Brazilian companies. The agency has allocated R$ 210 million to help exporters diversify their markets, targeting regions such as China, Germany, and Canada to reduce dependency on the US market.
