United States activates SPACEFOR-SOC special operations component
The United States Space Force (USSF) has activated SPACEFOR-SOC (Space Force-Special Operations Command), a new field command designed to institutionalize how space capabilities are organized, trained, and equipped for special operations. This move follows an agreement between the USSF and the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).
A formal military ceremony is scheduled for November 2, 2026, at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida to mark this organizational shift. SPACEFOR-SOC will join the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps as a component within USSOCOM, integrating space-based capabilities more deeply into special operations missions.
This development follows recent U.S. announcements regarding the presence of orbital weapons and occurs amid heightened tensions in space. Separately, reports indicate a Russian military satellite, Cosmos-2612, performed maneuvers in late September that brought it within approximately 100 meters of the Finnish commercial satellite Iceye-X36, which provides support to Ukraine.
