United States adjusts Canadian tariffs amid trade tensions

The United States government has adjusted its tariff policies regarding Canada ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections. The White House announced exemptions from a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods, such as cement and road salt, to mitigate supply chain disruptions. However, Washington simultaneously expanded levies on other Canadian products and announced bans on imports of certain alcoholic beverages, dairy, and motorcycles, effective late September 2026.

In response to previous American tariffs on approximately 27.6 billion Canadian dollars worth of goods, Canada has implemented retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent on various American products, including steel, aluminum, and agricultural machinery. Within the United States, Republican lawmakers have expressed concern that the trade tensions could increase costs for businesses and consumers in key electoral states.
