United States advances AI policy with sovereign wealth fund proposal and $5 billion biosecurity funding

A group of 200 economists and computer scientists, including 16 Nobel laureates, warned that artificial intelligence could cause large‑scale job displacement. They urged the U.S. government to create a sovereign wealth fund that would own AI‑related stock and distribute the benefits to all Americans. The idea, championed by Senator Bernie Sanders, is supported by a June 2026 survey in which about 70% of respondents said the fund should be required.

Separately, the White House announced more than $5 billion in federal funding to embed AI in biomedical research and biosecurity. The money will support the Genesis Mission, a cross‑agency effort involving over 15 departments, and the Bio Genesis Mission led by the NIH. Officials including science director Michael Kratsios, NIH director Jay Bhattacharya and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the investment will accelerate disease research, improve patient care, and maintain scientific standards.

Both initiatives reflect a broader U.S. strategy to harness AI for economic stability and public health while addressing concerns about its disruptive potential.
