United States advances nuclear expansion and cooperation plans

The United States and Argentina are advancing separate but related initiatives to strengthen their nuclear energy sectors and cooperation.

In the United States, the Department of Energy (DOE) is moving forward with plans for a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus (NLIC). After reviewing 28 proposals from 26 states, the DOE has narrowed the selection to five candidates. Tennessee, specifically near Oak Ridge, is a leading contender for the complex, which would manage activities ranging from nuclear fuel manufacturing and recycling to waste management and storage. This initiative aims to address the growing need for nuclear infrastructure as the industry seeks to expand.

Simultaneously, Argentina and the United States are working to finalize a new nuclear energy cooperation agreement before the end of the year. This new treaty is intended to replace the 1997 agreement that is set to expire in October 2027. The updated framework aims to facilitate the transfer of technology and materials, encourage private American investment, and integrate the Argentine industry into the North American nuclear value chain, including the potential introduction of small modular reactors.
