United States affirms respect for Brazil's elections amid diplomatic impasse

The United States Department of State has issued a statement affirming its respect for free and fair elections in Brazil, amid growing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Brasília.

The friction follows an impasse regarding the appointment of Daniel Perez, a Republican nominee approved by the U.S. Senate to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil. The Brazilian government has indicated it will likely delay the decision on his credentials until after the upcoming elections.

Additional tensions include Brazil's recent denial of visas to a U.S. delegation concerning critical minerals and high-ranking officials from the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. In a reciprocal measure, the U.S. has revoked the visa of Brazil's Ambassador to the United States, Maria Luiza Viotti, stating that
