United States air monitoring declines amid legislative efforts to restrict pollution data
Public air monitoring capabilities in the United States are declining due to reduced federal funding, a decrease in the number of active monitors, and aging equipment. This decline occurs as environmental risks such as wildfire smoke, data center pollution, and heat-driven ozone levels increase.
As official monitoring systems weaken, many communities have turned to low-cost, personal air-quality sensors. However, industry-backed legislative efforts in states including Louisiana, Ohio, and Kentucky are working to restrict the use of this community-collected data. These bills aim to prevent regulators from using any data for enforcement actions unless it meets specific EPA-approved standards.
While proponents argue that community sensors lack the reliability required for regulatory enforcement, internal communications suggest industry resistance to even more stringent accuracy requirements. For example, an official at the chemical company Chemours expressed opposition to a West Virginia bill designed to ensure data accuracy, stating it would “essentially codify what we are trying to prevent.”
