United States allocates $44 million to combat Pacific criminal networks

The United States and several Pacific Island nations have launched a series of initiatives to disrupt organized crime, drug cartels, and cybercrime networks across the Pacific region. Following the inaugural US-Pacific Islands Conference of Police Ministers in Los Angeles, the U.S. committed over $44 million to strengthen maritime security and law enforcement cooperation.

A significant portion of this funding, approximately $18.2 million, is dedicated to enhancing the preparedness of Pacific nations to detect and thwart money flows supporting narcotic groups. Within this allocation, $5 million is specifically designated for the Pacific Alliance for Combating Illicit Finance and Cybercrime (PACIFIC) program. This program aims to train regional officers in digital forensics, cryptocurrency tracing, and beneficial ownership investigations.

The agreement also focuses on addressing the rise of international online scam operations and the exploitation of cryptocurrency for money laundering. Participating governments, including officials from Australia, New Zealand, France, the Philippines, and Ecuador, have pledged to increase intelligence sharing regarding criminal infrastructure and strengthen the investigative capabilities of national cybercrime and financial intelligence units.
