United States and Australia See Surge in Heat Pump Adoption

In the United States, heat‑pump sales have doubled over the past 15 years and, in the first quarter of 2024, shipments outpaced fossil‑fuel furnaces by 32 %. Nearly half of new housing built in 2024 includes a heat pump, and utilities are testing networked geothermal systems that could be seven to eight times more efficient than gas furnaces.

In Australia, policymakers and utilities are encouraging all‑electric homes, citing lower energy bills, reduced emissions and health benefits. Heat‑pump hot‑water systems, reverse‑cycle air‑conditioners and induction cooktops are promoted alongside rooftop solar and home batteries. Federal and state rebate schemes, low‑interest financing and tools such as AGL’s Electrify Now™ aim to lower upfront costs and accelerate the transition.

Both countries view electrified heating as a key step toward decarbonising residential buildings and meeting net‑zero targets.
