Colombia and U.S. accelerate trade talks following devastating earthquake

Following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia on August 10 that caused approximately 300 deaths and nearly $9.6 billion in economic losses, the United States and Colombia are accelerating negotiations for a Reciprocal Trade Agreement. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Colombian Minister of Commerce Mauricio Gómez Amín to discuss strengthening economic ties and expediting trade discussions.

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella has requested that the United States temporarily suspend the 12.5% tariffs on Colombian products to provide relief to businesses affected by the disaster. The U.S. administration has expressed support for Colombia's recovery efforts, including humanitarian aid and rescue assistance.

In addition to diplomatic and trade efforts, Brazil has provided humanitarian aid by sending 19 tons of rice to Colombia via a Brazilian Air Force KC-390 cargo plane to assist with the emergency response.
