United States and Denmark sign Greenland security agreement

President Donald Trump has signed an agreement with Denmark and Greenland to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The deal aims to bolster the United States military presence in Greenland, paving the way for the development of more bases, including the construction of two major military installations.

Under the agreement, the United States will have permanent security control, though Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty. The deal is designed to remain in effect even if Greenland eventually pursues independence. NATO has welcomed the arrangement, stating it will “help advance security, stability and cooperation in this vital region.”

The strategic importance of Greenland has increased due to melting sea ice opening new shipping routes and the island's location in the Arctic Circle. Currently, the U.S. military presence is centered at the Pituffik Space Base, which supports missile defense and space surveillance operations.
